Purpose:
The purpose of the Committee is to conduct a review of solid waste management practices within the City of Yorkton and make recommendations to Council that will enable the City of Yorkton to achieve a Zero solid waste discharge to the landfill by 2026.

Authority:
Section 55 of The Cities Act provides for the establishment of Commissions and Committees and the Council of the City of Yorkton deems it expedient and in the general interest of the community that a Solid Waste Management Committee be appointed.

Partners involved with the Solid Waste Management Committee

The Prairie Harvest Employment Program provides employment training for at risk youth.  They provide a curbside pickup program of recyclable materials making recycling more convenient for city residents. 

The Business Improvement District assists local business people and property owners in revitalizing and promoting their business. They provide communication to their membership on acceptable solid waste practices in our community.

The Chamber of Commerce is a membership organization that represents the interests of business growth and prosperity of our members and communities. They play a key role in disseminating information about environmentally responsible behaviors.

The Canadian Federation of University Women is a voluntary, non-profit, self-funded bilingual organization of close to 10,000 women university graduates.  They are active in public affairs and work to raise the social, economic and legal status of women, as well as to improve education, the environment, peace, justice and human rights. 

The City of Yorkton Administration is responsible for the landfill, collection of the recycling levy, supplying data to drive decisions and implementation of bylaws that shape the behaviors of the public in an environmentally friendly way.

Ottenbreit Sanitation Services is a waste hauler who has taken an active interest in the development of environmentally sustainable options. They service the community recycling bins and deliver the contents to the Saskatchewan Abilities Council for processing.  They also monitor the loads being taken to the landfill and are aware of industry advancements in waste minimization.

The Saskatchewan Abilities Council works with people of varying abilities to enhance their independence and participation in the community through innovative employment programs that offer opportunities for valuable work experience, skills training, and meaningful competitive employment. They provide for the collection and sorting of all recyclable materials delivered to the Sarcan Recycling Centre.

There are also members at large who want to play an active role in promoting environmentally responsible behaviors.
