The City of Yorkton includes a $10 Recycling Levy on your residential utility bill.  This breaks down to $5 per month per residential household.  Of the $5 collected each month, $2 is contributed to the Prairie Harvest Curbside Collection Program and the remaining $3 is contributed to the Saskatchewan Abilities Council for processing the recyclable material collected.

Conservation is important and we can all make a difference.  Before disposing of material into the garbage, we must:

Rethink - what goes into the garbage
Reduce - consumption and waste
Reuse - everything you can
Recycle - whenever possible

The City of Yorkton has various ways in which materials can be disposed of in a convenient way.

Residential Curbside Recycling Program:
Curbside service is provided to residential dwellings.  Effective November 1, 2010, changes have been implemented to the curbside recycling service.  Residents participating in this program will contain their recyclables in clear, blue bags.  Recyclable items in clear bags will be collected from your curb on your scheduled pickup day.    Residents will be required to purchase the recyclable bags.  Bags may be tinted but must be transparent (blue is most common).  Black, orange or white garbage bags will not be picked up.  These bags are available at most retail stores where you purchase garbage bags.  Anyone with an existing blue bin and bag previously used for this service may retain them for their personal use.

FOUR EASY STEPS TO UTILIZING THE CURBSIDE BLUE BAG SERVICE:

  1. Rinse all glass bottles/jars, food tins/cans, milk cartons/jugs.  Flatten milk cartons, corrugated cardboard or paperboard boxes.  Cans can be flattened (optional).
  2. Place all paper products including cardboard, box board, newsprint, white paper or envelopes in one clear, blue bag.
  3. Place all other recyclable household materials (tin, glass, plastic, beverage containers) in another clear, blue bag.
  4. Put bags at curb on designated pick-up day by 8:00 am.

Accepted:  Glass bottles and jars, aluminum containers, tin cans, beverage containers, milk cartons, plastic beverage bottles, plastic bags and any household plastic with a number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 in the middle of the recycling logo, brown paper bags and tissue roll cores, corrugated cardboard and paperboard (cereal boxes), magazines and catalogues, telephone books, junk mail and envelopes, letter quality paper, gift wrap and packing paper.  (NOTE:  All containers/tins should be rinsed prior to disposal, plastic liners or windows should be removed from boxes)

Not Accepted:  Styrofoam, plastic food or product wrap, household garbage, ceramics, window glass, light bulbs, plastic motor oil and hazarous chemical containers, unclassified plastic items such as toys, recyclables that are not properly rinsed or prepared.

REASONS FOR CONVERTING TO THE CLEAR BLUE BAG SERVICE:

  • to contain refuse and keep it from littering City neighbourhoods
  • prevent interruption of service due to a missing bin/bag
  • avoid frustration of getting the wrong bin back
  • allow for increased recyclable material volume
  • reduce man-hours required to provide this service and allow for service expansion to the City.

Materials can also be taken directly to the Kinsmen Recycling Centre at 144 Ball Road.

For further information on this program or to find out your pickup day, please contact Prairie Harvest Employment Program at (306) 786-1840.

Green Residential Multi-Unit Recycling Bins:   *These bins are solely for residential recycling.

New multi-unit compartment bins were introduced to the City on October 19th, 2010.  The 19 residential community recycling bins were replaced with four larger multi-unit bins.  The multi-unit bins allow residents to pre-sort their recyclables into three categories:

  1. paper/cardboard
  2. plastic
  3. tin

The new multi-unit bins are located at:

Sarcan Recycling Centre Ball Road
Parkland Mall North Parking Lot

Only one of the previous community bins are remaining at the Co-op Food Centre for residential recycling of paper/cardboard products.
